An accelerometer device mountable on a substrate (e.g., a circuit board enclosed in a medical device) includes an accelerometer sensing element having an axis of sensitivity and first and second multilayer end caps. The sensing element has a device body with a longitudinal axis and a principal surface; the axis of sensitivity is generally perpendicular to the plane defined by the principal surface, with conductive pad regions on each end of the device body.
